The Parts of Medicare

If you are just starting to learn about Medicare, you’ve probably heard confusing terms such as “Part B”, “Plan N” “Part D”, and so on.

These different parts of Medicare cover important medical services, and often work alongside one another. Click on the button below each topic to learn more about each part of Medicare.

Part A

Part A provides Inpatient (Hospital) Coverage.

Medicare Part A is usually free for individuals (and/or those with a spouse) who have worked for 10+ years and paid FICA taxes.

Parts A & B work together to make up Original Medicare

Part B

Part B provides Outpatient (or Medical) Coverage.

You are required to pay a monthly premium for Part B, which is calculated based on your income as reported on your tax return from 2 years prior to your enrollment

Part C

Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits.

Most Medicare Advantage plans bundle the different parts of Medicare into one comprehensive plan. These plans are offered by private insurance companies, not the government.

Part D

Part D, also known as Prescription Drug Plans (PDP), cover your prescription medications.

Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies and cost an additional monthly premium. Not enrolling in credible drug coverage can result in penalties.
